Hi! Nice to meet you!

Sadie Gilker wearing a floral print mask and leopard-print jacket. Brown hair and brown eyes.

First things first, my name is Sadie, and I absolutely love embroidery.

I began embroidering on and off as a kid. I really liked using my hands to make stuff, so in my spare time, I would often fall back into knitting, crafting, drawing, and sewing (when I wasn’t reading). The fibre arts have always been a passion of mine. In high school, I got my first sewing machine and made my own clothes. They were ugly as sin, but I loved it.

I put aside the fibre arts for a while in my early 20’s because “I just didn’t have time.” Going out with friends and working seemed way more important. But then, one day, when I was feeling super listless at work, I saw one of my coworkers embroidering. (We worked at a call center, it was totally normal for us to be doing some sort of creative/school work while waiting for calls to come rolling in.) Watching her work careful stitches flooded my brain with long-forgotten memories of stem stitches and back stitches. Immediately, I knew I wanted to pick up the hoop again.

Within weeks I was turning out poorly made embroideries and enjoying every second of it. I finally felt like I had “come home.” I tried going at it alone for a while, which led to many overworked areas and very “rustic” looking patterns before finally trawling the internet for how-to videos. To my surprise and glee, there was a whole world of thread-heads out there making incredible pieces of art. Learning how to make more polished and professional pieces with the help of others is one of the things I love the most about embroidery. (That and its relative cheapness to make!)

I want this blog to be a space where I can celebrate fibre artists I love with profiles on their work, make how-to posts so you don’t have to go at it alone like I did for so long, and a space where we can talk about really cool historical aspects of embroidery! I look forward to sharing my art and my life with you!
